Production Process of Monel Button Head Socket Cap Screws
- Step 1. Material Preparation
- Raw Material: Select high-quality Monel 400 (UNS N04400) or Monel K500 (UNS N05500) bars or wire rods.
- Materials must comply with standards such as ASTM B164 or ASTM B865, offering excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.
- Step 2. Cold or Hot Heading
- Use cold heading or hot heading machines to form the basic shape of the screw, including the shank and round head.
- Hot heading is often used for Monel K500 due to its higher strength and work-hardening behavior.
- Step 3. Head Machining (Button Head with Hex Socket)
- Precision forming of the button-shaped head and internal hex socket using special dies or CNC machines.
- The hex socket must be accurately machined to ensure proper fit with Allen keys or hex wrenches.
- Step 4. Threading
- Threads are produced via thread rolling or cutting:
- Thread rolling is preferred for high-volume production and stronger threads.
- Thread cutting is suitable for custom or low-volume production.
- Available thread types include Metric Coarse/Fine and UNC/UNF.
- Step 5. Heat Treatment (for Monel K500 only)
- Monel K500 undergoes age hardening to improve strength and hardness.
- Typical aging is done at 480–620°C (896–1148°F) for several hours depending on part size and hardness requirements.
- Step 6. Surface Finishing
- Optional finishing processes include light polishing, pickling, or anti-galling coating depending on application.
- Monel generally does not require plating due to its inherent corrosion resistance.
- Step 7. Inspection & Quality Control
- Inspection items include:
- Dimensional accuracy
- Thread quality
- Concentricity of head and socket
- Material verification (chemical composition, mechanical properties)
- Quality checks are performed in accordance with ASTM F467, ASTM F468, or customer specifications.
- Step 8. Packaging & Delivery
- Screws are sorted, labeled, and packaged as per client requirements.
- Packaging options include plastic bags, cartons, wooden boxes, or pallets, along with heat numbers and Material Test Certificates (MTC).
